WI-FI SURVEY

Room-by-room Wi-Fi survey log

Record real RSSI, link speed, latency, throughput and loss at the same points, then compare before and after—without a predictive heatmap.

Measurement rule: Record the middle value (median) from three runs using the same device, point, server and time window. This tool runs only in your browser; it neither transmits nor auto-saves input.

1. Add a measurement

Device and tools

  • Device: Choose one phone or laptop and use it for every before/after run.
  • RSSI and link speed: On Android use a Wi-Fi analyzer or the connected-network details; on macOS Option-click the Wi-Fi menu; on Windows use the signal and receive/transmit rates from netsh wlan show interfaces. On iPhone/iPad, AirPort Utility Wi-Fi Scanner can show RSSI; enter 0 when link speed is not exposed.
  • Latency, download and upload: Use the same speed-test app or site and the same server. Record packet loss only when the tool reports it; otherwise write “not measured” in the note.

What each number means

RSSI (dBm)
RSSI is the received Wi-Fi signal strength. It is negative, and closer to zero is stronger; for example, −55 is better than −75.
Link speed (Mbps)
The negotiated radio rate between the device and AP; it is not the same as real Internet download speed.
Latency (ms)
Round-trip time to the test server; lower is better.
Download and upload (Mbps)
Actual measured throughput; higher is better.
Packet loss (%)
The share of sent packets that did not arrive; lower is better.

How to measure each room

  1. Choose a normal use point such as “bedside” or “desk chair” and name it.
  2. Hold the device about 1 m above the floor, not on it, with the same screen direction and grip each time. Stop moving and wait 10 seconds.
  3. Read RSSI and link speed, then run the speed test three times against the same server.
  4. Enter the middle value (median) of the three—not the best—and note the time plus any dropouts or call quality.

2. Measurements and weak points

PhaseRoomPointAPBandRSSILink speedLatencyThroughput ↓/↑LossNoteRatingAction

Planning heuristic for normal web and video-call use: Needs improvement if any of RSSI below −75 dBm, latency above 100 ms, download below 10 Mbps, upload below 3 Mbps or loss above 5%. Fair if any of RSSI below −67 dBm, latency above 50 ms, download below 25 Mbps, upload below 10 Mbps or loss above 1%. Link speed is not auto-rated because device limits vary. Review the worst rated item together with raw values.

3. Before/after comparison

Only records with the same room, point, AP and band are paired. Higher RSSI, link speed and throughput, and lower latency and loss, indicate improvement.
