Independent, privacy-first network planning tools
METHOD

Methods and limitations

We publish formulas, defaults and limits before advertising.

Purpose

Home Network Lab provides independent guides and planning tools for topology, addressing, wireless, segmentation, security and power capacity in homes and small offices. It does not endorse specific products or guarantee installation safety.

What defaults mean

  • 20% PoE headroom: a starting point, not a standards requirement.
  • 85% inverter efficiency: a simple default that varies by model and load.
  • 70% usable battery factor: a conservative allowance for age and discharge effects.
  • 0.8 power factor: an assumption when product data is unavailable; replace it when known.

Safety boundary

Even low-voltage communication work must follow building, electrical and fire rules, cable ratings and site conditions. Use a qualified professional for mains wiring or fixed electrical changes.

Revision policy

We prioritize official standards explanations and manufacturer sources, with review dates on guides. A correction channel will be added with the public release.

Editorial policy and visible change log

Scope is vendor-neutral home and small-office planning. We prefer RFCs, government security agencies, standards organizations and official protocol documents, and corroborate secondary material. Every core guide carries an actual review date and applicability limits; substantive changes update content, evidence and date together.

Corrections and privacy

Use the correction template and paste it yourself. There is no automatic submission, account or analytics, and inputs are not sent. Guidance is not a mandatory standard; adapt it to actual devices, ISP terms and national radio, building and electrical requirements.

Change log: 2026-08-23 — added bilingual planner, source review, examples, glossary and interactive troubleshooting.
